Section Two - Creating a WebRing
This section covers what you need to know in order to create your new Ring.

  1. Can I create a Ring if there is already a Ring with the same subject?
Yes. At this time we are not limiting the number of Rings on a specific subject because some topics are so diverse. We would like to keep the number as small as possible for space and speed. Consider this; if there are already 10 Rings about a specific subject would it be more beneficial to create another Ring just like it or to join an existing Ring?

  2. How do I create my Ring?
Creating your own Ring is a relatively simple process that includes instructions and step-by-step information. If you have read through these FAQs and understand the inner workings of WebRing, then you are ready to create your own Ring. Here's a little pointer: RingIDs cannot contain whitespace and are case insensitive ('Asdf' = 'asdF' = 'asdf').

  3. How do I create my Ring Homepage?
You will need to have an understanding of basic HTML before trying to create your Ring Homepage. Unfortunately, we don't have the resources or the time to teach HTML. However, there are many resources available on the World Wide Web.

You might also want to create graphics for your Ring such as logo, next site, etc. We do not supply graphics, but there are many sources on the web to supply all that you need.

    • Where do I put my page?
Because you need a place to put your Ring. Your URL must be in your Ring Configuration in order for potential members to get to your Ring Homepage from WebRing.

    • What do I have to put on it?
Your Ring Homepage must have all the necessary information describing your Ring and what it takes to join. Here is a list of the things you need:

      1. Description of your Ring and qualifications for sites wanting to join.
      2. Instructions on how to join.
      3. Form for submitting potential site information.
      4. An example of the "HTMLfragment" code.
      5. Link to random site in the Ring, and a list of all sites.
      6. Link to the Edit Site page.
      7. If you are allowing members to add sites to the Ring, a link to the Queue.

    • How do I create a "Submit" form for my WebRing?
If you want a submit form on your site, feel free to use our sample as a template.

  4. What's an "HTMLfragment" and what's it for?
The "HTMLfragment" is code contained in the links (i.e., next site, prev site, etc...) on each site in the Ring. This code provides a means for the WebRing database to know which site the user is coming from, and where the user wants to go. When the user clicks on one of these links, WebRing searches the database for the correct information,   then sends the user to the URL of the next site in the Ring.

    • How do I create my Ring's "HTMLfragment?"
There are samples to easily create the "HTMLfragment" code and modify to your specific needs.

  5. Is my Ring Homepage part of the Ring?
Not unless you add it to the Ring (it is not automatic). You have to add the Ring Homepage to the Ring just like any other site.
